Separating engagement geometry laterally means placing air and surface fires into distinct side-by-side engagement sectors so their firing envelopes don’t overlap in the horizontal plane. By assigning different azimuths or lateral corridors, you keep the aircraft’s attack path out of the area where surface fires are planned, reducing the risk of fratricide and weapon interference while still allowing both to engage targets effectively. Other methods address different dimensions or timings but don’t establish the same clear, side-by-side spatial separation: moving the aircraft vertically to avoid ground fire can fail if airspace limits or terrain constrain altitude; handling timing avoids overlap in time but doesn’t remove overlap in space; coordinating with adjacent fires helps prevent conflicts but doesn’t by itself create the required lateral geometry separation.
